Though some fashion gurus say otherwise, rubber
wristbands are still very much trendy and in vogue. Even
though some individuals refer to them as being 'once
trendy' and 'out of style', the truth is that these
wristbands have become a big part of unisex fashion
accessories, and are still being worn today. Because of
the symbolic nature and background of these wristbands,
many people still wear them as a statement of their
beliefs.
Be it to promote aids awareness or to fight poverty,
many people all over the world use wristbands to signify
the causes that they believe in, helping to promote
their beliefs. One example of a cause that has
effectively used rubber wristbands to transcend fashion
trends by becoming more than just a fashion statement is
the 'Livestrong' campaign.
When Lance Armstrong, one of the top cyclists in the
world, was diagnosed with testicular cancer at the young
age of 25, it was a terrible shock to the world.
However, he went on to win the Tour de France for a
record breaking sixth straight victory in 1999, despite
being diagnosed with cancer. It was during this landmark
victory that he wore a yellow rubber wristband with the
words 'Livestrong' embedded into it. This yellow
wristband was used to show support to all individuals
who were battling cancer, which is now an international
medical epidemic.
Once the media caught news of the symbolism attached to
this simple yellow wristband, more and more celebrities
began to endorse it by wearing it themselves. This
created a worldwide phenomenon, where thousands of
wristbands were sold daily all over the world. And with
the urging of iconic personalities such as Oprah
Winfrey, proceeds from the sale of the wristbands went
to the Lance Armystrong Foundation, which was set up to
encourage young individuals who were battling cancer, to
stay positive and strong in the midst of uncertain
times.
This is just one of the many causes that have
effectively used rubber wristbands to give people who
are suffering or less fortunate, a new lease of life. It
also gives many others the opportunity to make a
difference in someone else's life, by the simple act of
buying a wristband. Apart from being made of rubber,
these wristbands can also be made of leather, silicone
or papers. However, because raw rubber can be
attractively colored to suit your preference, the rubber
wristband has the attractiveness that most wristbands do
not.
