Even though the silicone wristband has died down over
the past few years, this does not dispute the fact that
it was one of the most popular fashion statements of its
time, which was mainly a result of individuals such as
Lance Armstrong, and his 'Livestrong' movement. This
movement was dedicated to supporting young individuals
who were struggling with cancer, and aimed to provide
support at all levels for both the afflicted individual
as well as his/her family. Because Lance Armstrong
himself battled with testicular cancer at a very young
age, and despite this, eventually went on to win a
record breaking 6 Tour de France victories, it brought
great support to his movement, which was symbolized by
only one thing: a yellow silicone wristband.
Due to the effectiveness of his campaign, now, many
other charitable causes have employed the same strategy
as a spin off the 'Livestrong' campaign. Today, you will
find wristbands in almost every color imaginable, used
to support all sorts of charitable causes ranging from
breast cancer awareness to deforestation. Now, many
companies and organizations are taking advantage of this
by using these wristbands to raise funds for whichever
non-profit organization they might be supporting.
Because these wristbands are available cheaply,
companies sponsor the production of the wristbands, and
sell them to raise funds. As a result, you have many
different organizations using a common method to
encourage others to give to those in need.
However, because these wristbands are so iconic and
symbolic, not only have they become a statement for a
cause that someone might support, but over the years,
they have become a kind of fashion statement as well.
Nowadays, you can find many retail stores which stock
fashion accessories, selling these very same wristbands,
in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and in every possible
color. Even though these wristbands do not hold the same
symbolic value as they once used to, they still remain
popular among teenagers, making these wristbands a
significant part of fashion today.
Even though teenagers today might not fully realise the
significance of the silicone wristband and how it has
evolved into what it is today, there is no disputing the
fact that it was an important part in the history of
fashion. Where a simple fashion accessory could be used
for the greater good of humanity and create the
awareness needed to encourage people to give to the
needy, it is truly hard to believe that this could be
possible with a silicone wristband.
